West’s refugee aid not morally superior
This was the first high-level meeting to deal with the refugee crisis since the founding of the UN. Figures from the UN show that there were 65.3 million refugees across the world by the end of last year, 5 million more than the previous year.
US President Barack Obama said his country will accommodate 110,000 refugees in the next fiscal year, 60 percent more than the figure in 2015. It is also reported that seven European countries including the UK, France and Italy promised to accept 10 times more refugees compared to 2015.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to throw in $2.8 billion to assist global refuges in the coming three years.
The assistance offered by the US and Europe seems to outweigh China’s $100 million fund. China has done its best and undertaken its responsibility, while the West should indeed play a major role in the refugee crisis.
There should not have been such a large-scale refugee influx in the 21st century. The current crisis mainly stemmed from the Middle East. Countries such as Syria, Libya and Iraq used to perform well economically, especially thanks to oil exports.
However, the wars and color revolution advocated by the US-led West have led these countries into despair, and people had no choice but to flee their homes.
With an arrogant mind-set, the US and Europe hastily pushed for Western-style democracy in the Middle East, contributing to the inflow of refugees. These Middle Eastern refuges flocked to geographically close Europe, imposing moral pressure on Europe’s ally, the US, as a consequence. Now the refugee issue has been raised at the UN level. The whole world is about to help the West out.
Countries which are capable of helping people in limbo should take on this responsibility. But it should be noted that the West is behind this misfortune and it should redeem itself by taking in refugees and pledging assistance. They should always feel regretful instead of morally superior.
At the very beginning, China objected to the West’s military intervention in the Middle East and color revolutions. Now China has made a dignified gesture by offering assistance to the refugees together with the West.
Worryingly, the West has not done enough reflection upon itself and refused to admit the link between their push for democracy and the refugee inflow.
The US and the West should take the blame for their continuing interest in interfering in non-Western countries. The West gives people an impression that it did not draw lessons from the ongoing refugee crisis. They will persist with their bigoted course by destabilizing a country which they dislike when they have the chance. Therefore, the West and its allies should take bigger responsibilities in taking in the refugees, which may help them realize the reason behind the crisis.
