WaterAid opens another 4 public toilets in the city
DHAKA, Aug. 22 (NsNewsWire) — WaterAid Bangladesh in association with Dhaka South City Corporation has launched another four public toilets in the city. These H&M Foundation funded toilets have been built at Bahdur Shah Park, Sayedabad Bus Terminal and Municipality Filling Station. Sayeed Khokon, Mayor, Dhaka South City Corporation has inaugurated these modern sanitation facilities today.
These visually stunning, female and disable friendly public toilets at busy places of the city are expected to offer users with comfort and convenience. These modern toilets equipped with facilities including separate chamber for male and female, locker, hand washing point, shower, safe drinking water facility, 24×7 electricity, CCTV camera, professional cleaner and female caretakers.
Honorable Mayor Mr. Sayeed Khokon said, “We will develop a planned public sanitation system in city for all inhabitants of Dhaka especially for pedestrians, commuters and women, especially for those who pass a long time in city’s streets due to heavy traffic”. Accordingly, Mr. Mayor committed to build 47 more modern and women friendly public toilets in densely populated areas of the city.
He added, “A citywide cleanliness campaign will start from 1 September and we shall clean the Kurbani waste within 48 hours”
Dr Md Khairul Islam, Country Director, WaterAid Bangladesh said, “City Corporation, WaterAid and H&M Foundation have jointly brought the facility for the commuters. The maintenance will be ensured under the public leaders”.
This is in continuation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed among Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka WASA and WaterAid Bangladesh to ensure environmental health by proper use of public toilets. Notably, WaterAid Bangladesh has rebuilt a number of public toilets in different strategic locations of Dhaka with support of Dhaka North and South City Corporation under the banner of project SUNRISE funded by H&M Foundation.
