Trump and leaders of South Korea and Japan discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula by telephone

Xinhua News Agency, Washington, April 28 (Reporter Liu Chen and Zhu Dongyang) US President Trump telephoned South Korea’s President Wen Yat-sen and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the 28th to discuss the latest developments on the Korean Peninsula.

The White House issued a statement on the same day that Trump and Wen discussed the 27th Japanese-language talks with North Korea’s State Council Chairman Kim Jong Eun. Trump and Wen stated in their conversations that North Korea’s future peace and prosperity depend on its “complete, verifiable, irreversible nuclear abandonment”.

The White House stated in another statement that day that the leaders of the United States and Japan believed that North Korea needed to abandon all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile projects.

Earlier in the day, Trump sent a message on social media saying that the current situation has been going smoothly and that the time and place for his meeting with Kim Jong-un are also being discussed. Trump said earlier that he and Kim Jong-un will meet in May or early June.

On the 27th, Wen Zaiyi and Kim Jong-un held a meeting with the “Peace House” on the Korean side of Panmunjeom and signed the “Declaration on Panmunjom for the Peace, Prosperity, and Unity of the Peninsula”. The two sides reached a consensus on such issues as improving North-South relations, mitigating military tensions, promoting the transition of the suspension mechanism, and establishing common goals for the denuclearization of the Peninsula.

According to the KCNA report, the 3rd Plenary Session of the 7th Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, held on the 20th, decided that North Korea will suspend nuclear test and intercontinental ballistic missile launch tests on April 21, 2018.
