The US’ days of deceiving and harming Hong Kong people are over: Global Times editorial
The White House released a statement on Thursday saying that US President Joe Biden, in the foreign policy interests of the US, signed a memorandum to defer the enforced departure for Hong Kong residents presently in the US with “compelling foreign policy reasons.” The memorandum is filled with attacks against the national security law for Hong Kong.
Soon after the statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tweeted, “We are offering a safe haven in the United States to those who fear returning to Hong Kong.” According to the statement, the US will defer the removal of certain Hong Kong residents for 18 months. But Blinken deliberately skirted around it that it was only temporary, and once again put forward his frequently used slogan, “We stand with the people of Hong Kong.” Such remark has almost become a part of the routine when senior officials in Washington say anything about Hong Kong. No one takes it seriously.
What kind of people, who are currently in the US, would fear returning to Hong Kong? The answer is obvious – anti-China rioters. Law-abiding, patriotic people who also love Hong Kong will only hope to leave the US, where the epidemic is raging and anti-Asian hate crimes are surging, as soon as possible. With the national security law for Hong Kong, the city has bid farewell to chaos, and every normal person would hope to return there early to live and work.
Senior politicians in Washington always say they “stand with Hong Kong people.” The subtext is they stand with anti-China rioters. Or, they want people in Hong Kong to stand with the US, confronting the government Washington does not like, playing the role of cannon fodder for US interests. In any case, unscrupulous US politicians have put the US on the opposite side of the interests of Hong Kong and Hong Kong people.
