Telenor, DNB bring NFC to Norway
Norwegian carrier Telenor has teamed up with DNB, the country’s largest bank, and identity management specialist Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) to introduce Norway’s first commercial NFC project.
Munich-based G&D is providing an NFC platform for the mobile network operator that supports remote management of the SIM-based secure element over the air (OTA), to enable contactless payment.
Following the success of the Tap2Pay pilot project launched in Oslo in 2011, Telenor is working to expand the scope of the scheme. When the service is launched the users will be able to pay at any payment terminal accepting contactless Visa transactions.
Remote management of NFC services on SIM cards allows DNB’s payment application to be securely downloaded to the protected area of the user SIM. G&D’s system enables access to the SIM card, initial personalisation of the security domain, and management of access authorisations for service providers and their applications over the air. As a result, Telenor can enable any service provider to introduce further NFC applications, such as public transport tickets.
