Post-polls violence leaves 5 dead, dozens injured‏

DHAKA, Jan. 6 (NsNewsWire) — At least three people were killed and about two dozen others injured in clashes between supporters of rival candidates of Sunday’s general elections in Dohar sub-district of capital Dhaka Monday morning, police said.
“Three people including father and son were killed as supporters of the rival candidates clashed with lethal weapons,” Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge, of Dohar Police told NsNewsWire.
He said they were beaten and stabbed to death.
About 24 people were also injured in the incident of clashes, he added.

Awami League party candidate Abdul Mannan Khan in Sunday’s parliament elections which were also marred across Bangladesh by opposition boycott and widespread violence.
Two more people, who sustained injuries during post-poll violence Sunday in two Bangladesh districts, also reportedly died early Monday.
Less than an hour after the parliament elections concluded, ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called a nationwide 48-hour strike form Monday morning demanding cancellation of Sunday’s general polls.
Osman Faruq, a spokesperson for BNP, announced the strike at a press briefing, saying it also aimed at protesting “death of 21 opposition men during election on Sunday”.
Faruq termed the parliament elections as a “farce” .
Out of 300 seats, Hasina’s AL has won 232 seats, which are more than enough to form a government, and was leading in most of the remaining constituencies.
Jatiya Party of former President HM Ershad, who ruled Bangladesh for nearly nine years from 1982 to 1990, emerged in Sunday’s election as main oppostion party by winning 31 seats. Enditem
