U.S. President Donald Trump is making his first state visit to China for cooperation. This is the third meeting of the two countries’ leaders after their meetings in the resort of Mar-a-Lago in the U.S. in April and the 2017 G20 Hamburg Summit in July. The significant meeting will set the tone for the future of Sino-U.S. relations which will contribute to a stable world.

The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has established the historical role of Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, confirmed that China’s major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics is to foster a new type of international relations and build a community with a shared future for mankind. As President Trump is the first foreign leader visiting China after the 19th CPC National Congress, how President Xi Jinping interacts with him will attract broad attention.

The world is no longer what it was before, profound changes have taken place in the balance of power between China and the U.S., regional and international conditions and domestic agenda in recent years. WhetherSino-U.S. relations can continue stable and peaceful development at the crucial period is a key issue.

Forty years ago, leaders of the two countries maneuvered the “trans-Pacific handshake” with strategists’ political courage and wisdom. Over the past forty years, trans-Pacific cooperationhas benefited both peoples.

As for the development of Sino-U.S. relations, China has put forward the new model of major-country relations featuring non-conflict and non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, demonstrating its confidence in avoiding the so-called Thucydides trap. This is based on China’s basic judgement on the two countries’ domestic and foreign conditions as well as its stronger capacity for actively shaping Sino-U.S. relations at present and in the future.

Sino-U.S. relations have already expanded from a matter of bilateral concern to one of regional and global implications, and both have found their interests tightly intermingled, and share the strong desire for stable and peaceful relations. At home, neither China’s aspiration for realizing the “Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the nation” and the U.S. attempt to “make America great again” can afford the two countries falling foul of each other. Internationally, China and the U.S., the world’s largest and second-largest economies and two permanent members of the UN Security Council, should take the responsibility of upholding stable international order.

Since Donald Trump took office as U.S. president, China and the U.S. have carried out frequent high-level exchanges and established four new high-level dialogue and cooperation mechanisms including diplomatic and security dialogue, comprehensive economic dialogue, law enforcement and cyber security dialogue, and social and people-to-people dialogue so as to promote pragmatic cooperation. New progress has been achieved in exchanges and cooperation in each field and at each level. The two sides have kept in touch to coordinate regional and international hot issues. Fruitful trans-Pacific cooperation demonstrates the vitality and huge potential of the development of Sino-U.S. relations.

Cooperation is the only correct choice for the two countries. President Trump expressed his desire for strengthening U.S.-China cooperation both during official phone calls and in his personal Twitter posts. According to the White House, President Trump will focus on economy and trade as well as the DPRK’s nuclear program on his trip to the Asia Pacific.

However, besides the two topics, the two leaders will also discuss such topics as globalization and the “Belt and Road” initiative. More importantly, they will carry out strategic communication and enhance strategic mutual trust to help the two countries and even the world consolidate the determination and confidence for solving major issues through cooperation.

The road ahead will not be smooth for Sino-U.S. relations. This state visit is a significant opportunity for the two countries to strengthen strategic mutual trust, and the meeting of the two leaders will play a guiding role in the development of Sino-U.S. relations, making them more positive, predictable and sustainable.
