Thousands form world’s biggest-ever human flag for Bangladesh to set Guinness World Record
DHAKA, Dec. 16 (NsNewsWire) — 27,117 volunteers have formed the world’s biggest-ever flag for Bangladesh in a bid to set Guinness World Record.
The volunteers from the Bangladesh Army, school children, and the general population, comprising mostly of the youth and enthusiastic professionals stood up with red and green blocks to form the flag in Dhaka’s National Parade Ground.
The participants stood there for 6 minutes 16 seconds, though the requirement for setting a new world record was 5 minutes.
After two trials for 30 seconds, the participants went to complete the flag around 1:30 p.m. local time.
Organizers had earlier said the main objective of this event is not only to celebrate Victory Day which falls on Dec. 16 but also show the world the inner strength and unity of the people of the nation.
They said previously the largest human national flag was created in Pakistan, on 21 October 2012, with 24,200 participants attending the Punjab Youth Festival at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. The placards, held above their heads, collectively depicted the Pakistani national flag.
After successful completion of the event, they said all relevant documents and images will be sent to the Guinness World Record committee for validation.
A Guinness-accredited auditor was present to oversee the attempt.
Bangladesh’s third largest cell phone comapny Robi Axiata Limited in collaboration with Bangladesh Army organized the entire event. Robi Axiata Limited is a joint venture between Axiata Group Berhad, Malaysia (92 percent) and NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan (8 percent). Robi is the third largest mobile phone operator in Bangladesh with more than 26 million subscribers as of November 2013.
According to a statement of the company, this incredible attempt will start on the morning of 16th December, Bangladesh’s victory day, with nearly 30,000 volunteers who will help to make the flag.
Speaking at the press conference recently, Robi Chief Financial Officer, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, thanked Bangladesh Army for their all-out support in the initiative.
He continued that “through this event we can show the world that despite all perceived shortcomings we have discipline and unity and the strength that drives this proud nation to uphold its national flag for take its place in history.”
