Joint Panel Discussion on- “Bangladesh : The Next Level of Development” held in Singapore

SINGAPORE, May 18 (NsNewsWire) — Bangladesh High Commission, Singapore organized a Joint Panel Discussion titled

“Bangladesh : The Next Level of Development” in collaboration with Institute of South Asian
Studies (ISAS) of the prestigious National University of Singapore (NUS) on 15 May 2018. The
event took place at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore. The Joint Panel Discussion was incidental
in celebrating the recent graduation of Bangladesh from LDC status. Ambassador Gopinath
Pillai, Chairman of ISAS opened the panel discussion.
The panel discussion elaborated on three topics: i) Bangladesh’s Infrastructure Development and
its Social Impact, ii) Economic Priorities for Bangladesh and iii) Bangladesh’s Role as a Regional
and Global Actor. Among the panelists were Ms. Ayesha Aziz Khan, Managing Director & CEO,
Summit Power International Pte Ltd, Dr. Monzur Hossain, Senior Research Fellow, Bangladesh
Institute of Development Studies and Dr. Amitendu Palit, Senior Research Fellow, ISAS. Dr.
Iftekhar A Chowdhury, Principal Research Fellow of ISAS chaired the panel discussion.
H.E. Mr. Md. Mustafizur Rahman, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Singapore delivered the
key note address. In his address, the High Commissioner elaborated on the path and process of
graduation of Bangladesh from LDC and highlighted the opportunities and challenges it entails.
The High Commissioner also mentioned that Bangladesh is the largest in terms of population and
size of economy amongst the countries that have graduated from LDCs so far. He also touched
upon the possible challenges to be faced by Bangladesh including loss of duty-free and quota-free
market access and described on the preparedness of the government in facing those challenges.
Ambassadors and High Commissioners of South-Asian Countries to Singapore, diplomats,
academics, eminent persons, businessmen and a large crowd of members of Bangladesh
