Japan’s assistance to the displaced Myanmar residents in Bangladesh

DHAKA, June 9 (NsNewsWire) — On May 28, the Government of Japan allocated two hundred million Japanese Yen

(approximately 1.78 million US dollar) to UNHCR for its programme to support the displaced
Myanmar residents in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, who were affected by the
destabilized situation in the northern part of Rakhine State, in the Republic of the Union of
Myanmar. This assistance is to support UNHCR’s activities under its “Cyclone and Monsoon
Preparedness and Response Programme” that also benefits host communities in
Bangladesh.
2. This brings Japan’s assistance through international organizations and NGOs to the crisis in
the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to more than 52 million US dollar since August 2017.
In addition to this assistance, the Government of Japan supports ongoing humanitarian and
development activities of JICA, which includes water supply in collaboration with IOM to
more than 40,000 people that benefits both the displaced Myanmar residents and host
communities in Cox’s Bazar.
