IPU concerned about latest attempt to undermine Venezuela’s National Assembly

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is deeply concerned about the latest attempt to undermine Venezuela’s National Assembly and urges the Venezuelan authorities to fully respect the Assembly’s integrity

The IPU expresses grave concern about statements from high-ranking Venezuelan officials indicating that parliamentary elections might be organized on 22 April 2018, thereby effectively cutting short the term of the current National Assembly, which is due to expire in January 2021. On many occasions, the IPU has expressed alarm over the continuing usurpation of the National Assembly’s powers and lack of respect for the separation of powers in Venezuela.  Advancing the date of parliamentary elections in the current context would add fuel to the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. The IPU urges the relevant authorities of Venezuela to reconsider their position, to refrain from any action that would subvert the National Assembly and to guarantee that its members can fully carry out their mandate. It stresses the importance of dialogue as the only means of resolving the continuing political stalemate.

The IPU recalls that the National Assembly was elected by the Venezuelan people to represent them; consequently it should be allowed to exist and function without any interference.
