India’s anti-graft party heading for landslide win in Delhi polls
NEW DELHI, Feb. 10 (NsNewsWire) — India’s anti-corruption Aam Aadmi Party (Common Man’s Party) is heading for a landslide win in the assembly elections in the national capital, decimating the country’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Congress party.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by 46-year-old former civil servant-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal, is currently leading in over 60 seats in the 70-member assembly, according to results of leads in vote counting, though the final results are yet to be announced, reports Xinhua.
On the other hand, the BJP, which had won 31 seats in the last assembly polls in December 2013, is staring at a huge debacle, leading in less than 10 seats.
Local TV channels reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already called up Kejriwal and congratulated him for the spectacular performance of his party and also offered him all support to run the government in the national capital.
“This is the people’s victory. My first priority will be to end bribery and the VIP culture. I promise to be the janta’s (people’s) chief minister,” Kejriwal told the media.
Delhi went to polls on Feb. 7, a year after Kejriwal resigned as the chief minister, following 49 days in power. Enditem
