Indian onion selling at Rs 45 in Bangladesh
New Delhi: Though onion prices have shot through the roof in India, it is selling at much cheaper price in the neighbouring Bangladesh.
As per a national news daily, onions are selling at Rs 45 in Bangladesh, while onion prices continue to reign at as much as Rs 100 a kg in major cities in India.
The paper has reported that places like Rajsahi, Chapai Nawabgunj, Baliadanga and Dhaka Mirpur in Bangladesh are selling onion for 64 taka (which converts into Rs 45). With 2,500 tonnes of onion being exported daily, an official at the West Bengal Exporters’ Commission Committee has said that the Indian exporters are incurring heavy losses due to non- revision of old tariff.
The official further said that National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (Nafed) had fixed the export tariff long ago and it needs to revise the rate soon else the exporters will lose interest.
Meanwhile, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister K V Thomas yesterday said that Onion prices will come down in next 10 days. He also asked traders to take legitimate margin and not loot consumers. Farmers should get reasonable price and consumers should also get onions at affordable rates, he said.
