Indian-controlled Kashmir sees continued turmoil

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Feb. 12 (NsNewsWire) — Restrictions imposed by authorities and shutdown called by separatist groups hit Muslim majority areas of Indian-controlled Kashmir Wednesday for the third straight day.

Clashes also sparked in Srinagar, summer capital of the region, after contingents of Indian police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stopped pro-independence protesters from marching toward United Nations office.

The march was aimed at commemorating the anniversary of a separatist leader Mohammad Maqbool Bhat’s execution in 1984 and urging the international community to press New Delhi on returning his mortal remains.

Authorities had deployed huge contingents of government forces in Srinagar and surrounding towns to enforce strict restrictions.
