IFRC Secretary General visits Cox’s Bazar

Geneva/Cox’s Bazar, Oct. 24 (NsNewsWire) — The Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Elhadj As Sy, arrives tomorrow in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh where Red Cross and Red Crescent operations are continuing to build in the face of one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Mr. Sy will spend Wednesday 25 October in camps that have sprung up in recent weeks following the arrival of more than 600,000 people from Myanmar’s Rakhine State. He will visit the 60-bed IFRC field hospital that was opened less than two weeks ago and has already treated more than 1,000 people.

He will meet with volunteers and staff from the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society who have been at the forefront of the humanitarian response, as well as with teams of international aid workers who have been deployed to provide support and additional expertise.

Mr. Sy will announce a dramatic increase in the IFRC’s international emergency appeal for people displaced in and around Cox’s Bazar.
