GP, Wikimedia initiative to enrich Bangla Wikipedia

DHAKA, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) — Grameenphone and Wikimedia Bangladesh arranged a two-day workshop to enrich the Bangla Wikipedia by educating the young contributors.
The workshop was attended by 52 i-Geniuses who were the champions of the event “Grameenphone – Prothom Alo Internet Utsab 2012” held across Bangladesh.
Wikipedia is the largest free online encyclopedia in the world. The Bangla Wikipedia is one of 287 language versions, each maintained by a community of volunteers. GPHouse arranged the workshop, entitled “Wikipedia Contributor Day,” to promote the Bangla Wikipedia among the young generation and enrich it through their contribution. Currently the Bangla Wikipedia has around 28,000 articles.
The participants were educated on the Internet and its usage, Internet safety, how Wikipedia can be a tool for empowerment and the process of contributing content to Bangla Wikipedia.
The workshop was inaugurated by Tahmeed Azizul Huq, Head of External Communications, Grameenphone along with Munir Hasan, President of Wikimedia Bangladesh. Rajeeb Bhattacharjee, Head of Marketing of GP handed over the certificates among the participants.
Grameenphone has an ambition to provide “Internet for All” in Bangladesh. Wikipedia, which is fifth most visited site in the world according to ComScore, can be great source of knowledge for many Bangladeshis if its Bangla version continues to prosper. Grameenphone is supporting Wikipedia with a goal of ‘Overall internet growth by enriching Bangla net contents in Bangladesh domain’ during this month of Language Movement and International Mother Language day.
