Gas blast in Bangladesh capital leaves 1 dead

DHAKA, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) — At least one people was killed and 7 others injured due to gas pipeline explosion inside a house in the Bangladesh capital city of Dhaka early Saturday, officials said.

The incident happened at around 4:00 a.m. local time from a leak in the gas pipeline on the ground floor of the three-storey building, said a fireman.

Shafiqul Islam, a senior station officer of Dhaka’s Uttarkhan Fire Service and Civil Defence, told journalists that after the blast a fire swept through the residential building, leaving eight members of the same family burn-injured.

He said all the injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit.

“One of the victims injured in the blast succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning,” Md Bachchu Mia, sub-inspector of the hospital’s police outpost, told journalists.

He said the conditions of five of the victims are stated to be “critical.”
