Death toll rises to 84 in Bangladesh’s war on drugs

DHAKA, May 28 (NsNewsWire) — Eleven more suspected drug peddlers were killed Saturday night and early Sunday morning, bringing to 84 the total death toll from the intensified war on illegal drugs in Bangladesh.
The alleged drug peddlers have reportedly been killed since early May in what law enforcers termed “shootout” amid the countrywide anti-drug crackdown.
The deadliest period of the anti-drug crackdown has also seen thousands of suspects detained.
Bangladesh’s anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) earlier this month announced the countrywide anti-narcotics drive under orders from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who had asked the law enforcers to go tough against drug peddlers.
Last week she said raids to eliminate drug trafficking in Bangladesh supervised by RAB were similar to the ones conducted against militants.  Enditem
