Blockade violence claims 9 lives
DHAKA, Nov. 27 (nsnewswire) — Wide spread violence in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country marked the second and final day of the nationwide blockade enforced by main opposition alliance, throwing normal life out of gear Wednesday.
Incidents of clash, arson, vandalism, chase and counter-chase, bomb explosions and detention have been reported across the country.
With the killing of two more people on the second day, unabated violence toll so far rose to 9.
A woman who sustained critical injuries when a crude bomb hit in her head in Dhaka’s Malibagh Tuesday died at a hospital early Wednesday.
Wednesday’s second death was reported from Satkhira where an activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party was shot dead.
Most of the deaths were not officially confirmed.
The first day of the blockade also saw huge violence in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country that reportedly left at least seven people including one parmilitary Bangladesh Border Guard soldier dead, scores badly injured.
In protest against the announcement of poll schedule, opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its 17 allies announced to enforce countrywide road, railway and waterway blockade for 48 hours from Tuesday morning.
On account of the blockade, many usually busy streets of the capital looked almost deserted as most means of public and private transportation remained off the roads.
