Bangladeshi ruling party wins 2 city elections, opposition wins 1
DHAKA, July 31 (Xinhua) — Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party has maintained supremacy as its candidates won big in two city corporations though suffered a defeat to arch rival ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist (BNP) in another local election.
AL’s AHM Khairuzzaman Liton secured 165,096 votes in Monday’s election for Rajshahi City Corporation, some 256 km west of Dhaka, while BNP’s Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul bagged 77,700.
Meanwhile, AL’s Serniabat Sadik Abdullah secured a decisive victory by attaining 107,353 votes when BNP’s Mujibur Rahman Sarwar got 13,135 votes in Barisal, some 169 km south of capital Dhaka.
The BNP retained its stronghold in Sylhet, some 241 km northeast of capital Dhaka, where the opposition candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury won by a small margin, securing 90,496 votes while AL’s Badruddin Ahmed Kamran got 85,870. Enditem
