Bangladesh PM unveils foundation stone plaque of 1200-MW power plant

DHAKA, Jan. 29 (NsNewsWire) — Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday unveiled the foundation stone plaque of a 1200-megawatt coal-based power plant at Matarbari island in the country’s Cox’s Bazar district, reports Xinhua.
Hasina unveiled the foundation plaque of the power plant, located some 292 km southeast of capital Dhaka, through video-conferencing from her official residence in capital Dhaka.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is financing the project which also features a deep sea-port.
Bangladesh has long been contemplating to turn Matarbari into a major economic hub with some mega infrastructures including a deep-sea port there.
State-run Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Ltd (CPGCBL) which in July last year inked a deal with a Japanese consortium, comprising Sumitomo Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and IHI Corporation, will implement the project at an estimated cost of 4.5 billion U.S. dollars.
Of the total amount, 1.3 billion U.S. dollars will reportedly be spent for constructing the port and the rest for the power plant which will use imported coals to generate power, and it will have two units, each having 600 MW production capacity.  Enditem
