Aminur Rahman becomes the RLSS Commonwealth Director for Drowning Prevention
The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) – Commonwealth has appointed Dr. Aminur Rahman as Drowning Prevention Director. The board of Trustee of RLSS on September 19, 2018 has unanimously decided to appoint Dr. Rahman for such a respectful responsible position. The RLSS – Commonwealth Drowning Prevention has been working to eliminate drowning in the Commonwealth having active Branches in 27 Commonwealth Nations, which aimed at reducing the incidences of drowning around the world by developing community based drowning prevention strategies and lifesaving education programmes, and providing advice and education to Government, NGOs and individuals on the development of water skill.
Dr. Rahman is the Director, International Drowning Research Centre-Bangladesh which is part of the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB). He also acts as an Adjunct Faculty, School of Public Health, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) since 2017. Before joining CIPRB he worked as Assistant Professor in the Institute of Child and Mother Health (ICMH), Dhaka for eight years (1997 to 2005). Prior to that he was the Lecturer, Department of Community Medicine, Dhaka Medical College for six years (1992 to 1997).
Dr Rahman has been awarded his PhD from the Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden for developing and implementing childhood drowning prevention program for rural Bangladesh. Dr. Rahman has published more than 70 articles in peer reviewed journals. He co-authored WHO “World Report on Child Injury Prevention” and a drowning book “Drowning – Prevention, Rescue, Treatment” and acted as one of the editors of “Global Report on Drowning Prevention”. During World Conference of Drowning Prevention 2017, the International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) awarded him for his “Distinguished Service to Drowning Prevention”.
