Additional Australian Humanitarian Assistance to Bangladesh

DHAKA, June 25 (NsNewsWire) — The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, has announced an additional humanitarian funding package of AUD18.4 million to meet the urgent needs of Rohingya people and the host community in Bangladesh affected by the crisis.
The large number of Rohingya people that have fled across the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. The Government of Bangladesh is continuing to devote significant resources to this response.
The Australian Government is committed to working side by side with Bangladesh to support those in need.
Australian funding will be allocated to its partners on the ground including the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), International Organisation for Migration
(IOM) and World Food Program (WFP), providing food, shelter, health and protection services to the most vulnerable people living in Cox’s Bazar.
Specifically, Australian funding will contribute to the provision of food for more than 800,000 people and nutrition supplements for around 139,000 women and children. It will
reinforce shelters, pre-position food supplies and help relocate up to 135,000 people at the highest risk of landslides. It will also help reunite children with their families, create safe
areas for vulnerable women and children and provide incomes to around 40,000 women.
The additional funding brings Australia’s total humanitarian response to the Rohingya crisis to AUD70 million since September 2017.
