70 NURSES GRADUATES FROM GRAMEEN CALEDONIAN NURSING COLLEGE
DHAKA, Dec. 18 (NsNewsWire) — The sixth graduation ceremony Grameen Caledonian Nursing College (GCCN) was held on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at with 70 students graduating nursing diplomas. Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus presided over the graduation ceremony. Mr Frank Crossan, Professor, Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), Scotland & Consultant, GCCN represented Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University at the graduation ceremony. All the girls are daughters of Grameen Bank families, and have already been hired by top hospitals of Dhaka.
Currently about 336 students are pursuing diploma and BSc in Nursing at the college. Since its inception in 2010, 293 students have graduated from the college. Six of them have gone on to complete BSc at Glasgow Caledonian University and two are pursuing their MSc in the UK with scholarship who are expected to join GCCN as faculty once they complete their studies. In Bangladesh the nurse graduates have been hired by top flight hospitals.
Applications from the children of Grameen Bank borrowers are screened once a year and the selected applicants receive an education loan from Grameen Bank to cover all the costs related to their. Students get all equipment, dress; accommodation covered in the loan and receive a one year grace period before they are required to pay back the loan through installments.
GCCN is a joint venture social business in the health sector between GCU, Scotland and Grameen Healthcare Trust that was established in 2010 by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus with an aim to create a world class nursing training institute in Bangladesh. It started its journey at rented space but is planning to shift to its own permanent premises by 2020.
During his speech at the graduation ceremony, Professor Muhammad Yunus congratulated the young nurses and said, “I am really happy to see you as graduates today. Your parents are the happiest persons who are all members of Grameen family. I hope you will serve your patients with care and empathy.” Professor Yunus hoped that GCCN will continue to contribute to the country’s healthcare industry by creating world class nurses that are both efficient and caring.
